4 Strange Statistics about American Cities

April 17, 2023

1. Largest City Without, and Smallest With, a Major League Sports Team citystats10

The United States has four main sports leagues: the NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL. 11 cities have at least one club in each conference. 30 others have at least one club from any league, indicating that 41 cities have at least one major league franchise. These are typically the biggest and most significant cities in America. But one developing city lacks a big league team: Austin, the 14th largest city in America. However, Austin is home to the University of Texas, one of the biggest institutions and largest sports departments in the nation. So the inhabitants of Austin aren’t deprived of big time sports.

The biggest city without a significant professional or major college team is officially Fort Worth. But Fort Worth, as indicated previously, is connected with adjacent Dallas. Cowboys Stadium is really in Arlington, which is closer to Fort Worth than Dallas. So in the classic sense, the most athletically disadvantaged city is the aforementioned El Paso. It’s home to the University of Texas-El Paso, but it’s not in one of the “big five” collegiate conferences. Professionally, the best El Paso can claim are a minor league baseball and hockey club.

Major sports clubs clearly prefer to be in major cities and TV markets. But Green Bay, with a population of barely 104,000, has preserved its beloved Packers since 1919. They even have the biggest waiting list for season tickets in professional sports, with nearly 81,000 individuals unlikely to acquire them in their lifetime. The season ticket waiting list isn’t far from the population of the city, which is weird on so many levels we’re not even sure where to begin.

2. Largest and Smallest Cities by Area

citystats9

Some cities sprawl. Their limits are vast and the outcome is plenty of open space, single family houses and room to develop. Others have extremely minimal useable area remaining inside its bounds, since much of the land has already been developed. But no big city occupies a smaller area than San Francisco. In reality, it’s likely set to approach a population limit of 830,000, since the city lies on the northern extremity of a peninsula with neighbouring cities south of it. There’s no space to grow its measly 47 square miles. The consequence is a population density of 17,000 people per square mile, second only to New York City.

Jacksonville, conversely, has an area of 747 square miles, or roughly half of Rhode Island. That gives it far and away the least population density in America. If San Francisco had Jacksonville’s density its population would be a measly 52,640, not even enough for it to rank in the top 100… of California. Conversely, if Jacksonville had San Francisco’s density its population would be 12.7 million, or approximately four million more than New York City.

3. Largest City on an International Border DCF 1.0

America has land boundaries with just two nations, yet they’re among the longest boarders in the world. So it seems to reason that many of America’s population centers would locate along them. It didn’t actually turn out that way, however. While there are numerous significant cities on state borders, only two sit immediately on an international border – Detroit and El Paso.

Population wise, Detroit is now rated 18th and El Paso 19th. But considering the aforementioned falling population of Detroit it’s likely expected to be eclipsed by the Texas city within a few years. Both cities need crossing a river to get to the opposite nation, yet even though Detroit is on the Canadian border you would head south to go over the border in both circumstances. Crossing the Rio Grande into Mexico seems clear, yet for a brief period the Detroit River flows east to west directly through downtown Detroit. So the aforementioned claim about being “born and raised in South Detroit” is really something of an oxymoron.

4. City With The Largest Suburbs citystats7

Suburb is a rather loosely defined word, but for simplicity’s sake we’ll define it in the usual definition of any smaller city or town on the boundary of a major city. Long Beach, California and Mesa, Arizona are the two biggest suburbs in America, bordering Los Angeles and Phoenix respectively. Each has a population of around 450,000. However, they’re much smaller than the parent city, with Long Beach only having approximately 12% the population of Los Angeles and Mesa roughly 30% of Phoenix.

Denver has a population of around 650,000. Neighboring Aurora has a population of around 350,000, making it 54% the population of Denver. Both cities continue to expand and both are virtually comparable in geographical size, although Aurora is less congested. Should Aurora alter its strategy to expansion it might swiftly become a metropolis equivalent to Denver, and the two will become another pair of Twin Cities.
